How Does It Work?

IDD Therapy works in several ways:

  • IDD Therapy targets the specific area in your spine, that is causing the pain, using precise computer controlled pulling forces.  This improves the mobility in your spine and gets you moving again.

  • The pulling force is gradually and precisely increased during a course of treatment, to allow optimal decompression to occur.
  • This decompression effect relieves the pain of sciatica and slipped discs by taking the pressure off the discs and nerves in your back.
  • Thermedic Infra Red packs are also used, to help relieve pain and increase blood flow to the area being targeted by the SPINA machine.

Does the Treatment Hurt?

Safe, gentle and effective

Patients do not typically feel any pain during treatment.  The treatment itself is actually quite gentle, it is not unusual for people to fall asleep during their decompression treatment.

The decompression pulling force uses is set as a precise proportion of your body weight.  This means it is very specific to you and therefore unlikely to cause any pain or discomfort.

The decompression forces uses are built up slowly and gradually during the course of your treatment, depending on your history and how you are responding to treatment.

After your treatment, we apply a cold compress to the area, this helps to reduce any soreness after the treatment.  Some patients do report soreness similar to what you would expect after having hands on treatment, such as massage, but this generally gets less intense as the treatment course progresses.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

IDD Is A Course Of Treatment

Everyone is different but typically takes place over a 4/6 week period.  This allows time for the body to adapt with the goal of gently improving and restoring normal spinal function.

The exact number of treatments required will depend on your condition and how your body responds to the decompression therapy.

While relief from pain can be experienced in the early stages of treatment, the body does not adjust over night, especially when chronic conditions may have built up over a long period of time.

So Why Choose IDD Therapy?

If any of the following describes you and your situation, IDD Therapy may be the solution for you:

  • Your current treatment is not working or only giving you very temporary relief.
  • You are taking painkillers and would like to stop.
  • You are seeking long term pain relief.
  • You want to get back to normal and get your life back
  • You are considering invasive treatment such as injections or surgery, but prefer to avoid these.

Clinic Director Nicola McLennan, BSc(Hons) Ost.Med.DO,N.D, :

"IDD therapy is ideal for you if you have ongoing back or neck pain that is not improving with painkillers or hands on treatment and/or have been diagnosed with a slipped, bulging herniated disc or sciatica. As osteopaths we specialise in back pain but some conditions, particularly disc injuries, don’t always respond to treatment. For years we referred these patients for injections or in severe cases for surgery. When we discovered IDD therapy we were delighted to find an effective alternative and promptly became the first IDD providers in our area!"
